LAST EXIT - Headfirst into the Flames: Live in Europe (1993)
So... it's been six months since I took my sabbatical from all things blog-related. Shit, I can't be bothered looking at/involving myself with much of anything on thee web. There's a glaringly obvious reason for this: Most people suck at the internet. Thus, to paraphrase Abbath of Immortal, "why let others rule when I can?" Does that mean I'm back to posting with the same frequency/fervor as in the past? Who fucking knows. That depends largely on the enthusiasm or lack thereof this return generates (not that I care if you leave comments or any such shit. I've long given up on garnering any appreciation other than being linked and dissected on all y'alls geeky little message boards).
For thee unaware, Last Exit was a noisy, free jazz/rock combo featuring Sonny Sharrock (guitar), Bill Laswell (bass), Peter Brotzmann (sax) and Ronald Shannon Jackson (drums). I'm not gonna waste a whole lotta spewage on this little gem. I've already prattled on at length on Sonny Sharrock, which will tell ya all ya need to know about how I feel about his axe-mauling, how little I like Bill Laswell (and his half-assed Bootsey imitations here do little to change my mind)... there might even be a word or three about Teutonic Sax Genius, Peter Brotzmann, somewhere. Anyway, "Headfirst" was recorded in Stockholm, Sweden and Munich, Germany in 1989. You wanna hear a shitload of Sharrock/Brotzmann duels with no studio niceties to fuck 'em up, doncha? Thought so.

Yeah, good to see you back!
ReplyDeleteAny/all new stuff you might care to post would definitely go down well round here.
... and he returns with LAST EXIT - nice!
ReplyDeleteStick around awhile, and I will too...
Aw... good to see some of these old names (and a hardy "how the fuck ya doin'!" to the new ones).
ReplyDeletei had almost given up hope of seeing you return, and i very thankful that you did. thanks!
ReplyDeleteSharrock and Brotzmann! I had no idea this existed, thanks.
ReplyDeletenice to see you back. quite a surprise too. just came back from a couple months of hiatus as well - like yourself, not sure how often i'll bother but, something's better than nothing i suppose. cheers!
ReplyDeleteFinally - I've been trying to find this one everywhere - now my Last Exit live collection is pretty much complete!!
ReplyDeleteIt amazes me how different each of their albums is. they must have just felt like doing something differently everywhere they played - which is the point to free improvising - but they still actually make some music!
Very cool.
ThanX
2nd moment of awesomeness on the internet today and all within 5 minutes. after reading the ronnie james dio post on cosmic hearse, i find this.
