Ugggh!! Heeeey!

CF RIP
VARIOUS - In Memory of Celtic Frost (1996)

As Ye shouldst know by now, tribute/covers albums are dicey propositions at best. You can count yer damn self lucky if there happens to be one or two heartfelt renderings of tuneage ya hold dear. Worst of all, there's always at least some jackoff hipster band that decides to be all "clever" and do a disrespectful "interpretation." Y'know, those oh-so yawn-inducing "lounge arrangements" and the like. But believe me when I tell you that this here collection actually fucking works. The bands involved have undoubted passion for the material, and they've obviously been heavily inspired by Frost & Hellhammer-- and that's coming from someone who thinks of Tom G. & Co's early works as a listening experience bordering on religion. For over two decades now... fuck I'm old.

Thee Culprits:

1 Morgion - Innocence and Wrath / The Usurper
2 Enslaved - Procreation (of the Wicked)
3 Slaughter - Dethroned Emperor
4 Mayhem - Visual Aggression
5 Inner Thought - Morbid Tales
6 Sadistic Intent - Return to the Eve
7 Cianide - Dawn of Meggido
8 Divine Eve - Visions of Mortality
9 Grave - Mesmerized
10 Apollyon Sun - Babylon Fell
11 Opeth - Circle of the Tyrants
12 Closedown - Danse Macabre

Note: Be sure to stick around for thee two hidden bonuses-- Wimp...er...Emperor's take on "Massacra," and all-femme sludge outfit 13's version of "Triumph of Death."

  3. Thanks for posting this. I haven't heard this for a long time. Yep, like you said, this actually works. And damn this 13 version of "Triumph of Death" rules! The Black Lotus label CF tribute (that came out in 2003) is really uneven compared to this. Also, this is likely the best tribute album Dwell ever put out.

  4. Hey Jake, Long Time BLABLAH..
Have you heard 'Death Breath'? It's pretty gimmicky tongue in cheek 'Death 'N' Roll' (without too much winking) from Entombed / Hellacopters doods. Basically, it's first wave black metal and a lil' death metal worship from before death became totally insular and black metal was still Celtic Frost, Bathory and Venom. Inconsequential, but fun stuff - I've got if you need.

  5. Holy fuck.

I thought you'd died. Where ya been, man? Good to "see" ya!

To answer yer q, I took a shot at Nicke somewhere on here for the cynical, cash-in nature of Death Breath. "Gimmicky" is the perfect way to describe it. I mean, I can't be too hard on the dude, cuz he was, after all, one of the major architects of "Clandestine," possibly thee GREATEST death metal album EVER. Still, DB screams "garage punk is dead, death metal's back in" at me.

  6. Likewise. I had some music drama for a bit, thought I was getting signed, didn't, multiple moves and started a job in advertising. IT'S JUST LIKE MADMEN! But with tons of internet surfing and no intensely hot redhead amazons.

To me DB sounds like a crossroads - not a complete return to death metal, it's too simple and fun for death metal fans to dig it, plus it follows riff logic - a rock move for sure. It would've been cool to hear a true garage death hybrid, but - that wouldn't sell, would it?

Man, I can see why you don't post too much anymore - the discussion has turned to friggin' dust. I did some posting over at Shiny Grey Monotone in their forum - tons of downloads and, to this date, NO DISCUSSION whatsoever. What's the point, y'know?

I'm just surprised by how quickly it all turned to shit.

Oh, Organ*Pron has been an endless source of amusement - a lot of confused old folks trying to buy and sell their organs, leaving their phone numbers, making demands, it's awesome. No CC #'s yet, but it's only a matter of time.
