FLOWER TRAVELLIN' BAND - The Times (Best of, 1975)
Betcha never thunk a cult band like this 'un had a "Greatest Hits" package now, didja? Well, they do sho nuff. I can't imagine why I'd need to give even thee skimpiest of outlines introducing y'all to these gents. If you've been here before or surfed yer way in looking for FTB, you know what to expect by now. If by some miracle or some standard form of human ineptitude ya don't, I did beat my gums at top speed over their "From Pussies to Death in 10,000 Years of Freakout" bootleg here. I will give y'all a quick piece of my always sterling consumer advice though: this collection is essential for no other reason than to spare yer earholes thee torment of slogging through their misgiuided trawl through thee muck of tedious prog-rock, "Make Up." Here ya get thee best ditty from that disaster in thee Godzilla Vs. Mothra thunder of thee Sabbariffically doom-laden "Hiroshima."
Track list:
1 Satori Pt. II
2 Satori Pt. I
3 Shadows of Lost Days
4 Hiroshima
5 Make Up
6 Look At My Window
7 Spasms
8 I Wanna See You

where the fuck are the comments? jezziz pplz. regardless...this is probably my favorite FTB record as far as actual spins goes...the true cream of the crop that finds the band doing their own thang in the best way imaginable...their early stuff is mostly boring covers work, their later stuff finds them tackling bad prog in a most embarrassing fashion, but for one album, parts of another and the afformentioned awesome "Pussies to Death" boot, FTB was something else...kinda like "Tago Mago" area Can if Can eshewed Stockhausen and the Vlevets for Deep Purple and Sabbath, and instead of acid and hash it's Natty and Pabst, maybe a shwaggy joint or two--fucking losers with no prospects, roaming the Japanese countryside buck naked and with the sheriff's sailor-outfit-clad daughter in tow.
ReplyDeleteGood summation-- and I agree with ya pretty much 100%. Other than "Satori," and the "Pussies" boot, their full-lengths don't hold up very well as actual collections of songs. Great moments, but very little in the way of inspiring repeated plays.
ReplyDeleteAs for the lack of comments, I don't worry about it too much-- I'll bet there'll be plenty when I announce my retirement in the very near future. All missions accomplished for me.
Well, let me be the first to say thanks for all the sweaty, scuzzy, completely irresponsible music you've turned me onto over the course of this blog. I say we all blare that 3-hour version of "96 Tears" from "96 Tears Forever" until our ears bleed at least once a day for as long as we live.
ReplyDeleteJust now getting 'round to this here. "Satori" I met up with years ago, but felt no reason to go very far into the rest of their catalog until now. Thanks for the hospitality, as always.
ReplyDeleteDamn "Hiroshima" is a monster! Great tunes, thanx!
