Short Sharp Shocks Revisited

PAINTBOX (Jpn) - Singing Shouting Crying (1999)

{First off, I must confess I haven't been in the mood to write at all lately-- so I'm gonna give y'all a Reader's Digest version this time around.}

Expertly executed Motörthrash/Burning Spirits-style hardcore featuring the late, great Chelsea on guitar--whom you should remember from thee most excellent Death Side. Paintbox are much in the same vein, with blistering tempos fused with the same kinda soaring, melodic lead fretwork you'd expect on a Thin Lizzy or Iron Maiden album.

In comments.

VARIOUS - Killed By Hardcore Vols. 1-3

Essential (bootleg) international hardcore comps from the same folks who brought ya the "Killed By Death" series, Redrum Records; before the series got deregulated and every beer-bellied, clueless old punker started yankin' out limp powerpop crap I wouldn't wipe my ass with. I think the track lists tell the story far more eloquently than I ever could-- if not, y'all best get Googlin' to edumacate yer damn selves.

  2. Yes, obviously I presumed you were posting some sort of new re-mastered (or indeed revisited) version of the Chaos U.K. LP ha ha ha. Grabbing those comps though, because I seem to have lost this shit somewhere. Vol 3 track 9 translates as "My cock is my tool (can I piss in your fix)" ha ha ha ha.

  3. Your "fix"? Hahaha.

    Whenever I do a post where I don't feel like writing, I call it "Short Sharp Shocks"; had to get these up again though from Thee Olde Blog. Felt kinda wrong without 'em.

  4. hey, thought you might want to know about this gig:
    Times New Viking/Raven/Mike Rep & the Quotas/Puffy Areolas August 23rd at the Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland. Jake, I'm sure you hate TNV, but how can you pass up this show? I'll be there fer sure, there's no way I'm missing Raven. He was supposed to play at the Ohio Experimental Music Fest, but he got too drunk and was just pissing off mustached hipsters. Until they found out who he was, and then they were all "Hey, can I have one of your albums?"... What a guy. Unlike 99.9999% of white blues rockers, Raven LIVES IT.

  5. Geezus-- I thought Mike Rep was dead! That sounds like a most promising gig, but finances will need to be A-O-Fucking-K to get there (I may write a lot about Cleveland, but I don't live there).

  6. hell, most people that think they live in cleveland don't actually live there... i'll have to make a trek, but it's worth it for the Raven Mad Jams. Rep's still kickin', i think he might have put out some new stuff, but my brain's too drug addled this morning to remember details.

    PS- the Leon Thomas album fuckin' rules. as Crowley said, "because a child can understand it". if i had kids i'd play 'em leon and albert ayler til they went deaf.
