I gotta give a tip o' thee lid to the legions of nuevo-doom outfits out there. It's gotta be tough making a living outta playing within the heavily scene-enforced signifiers of a marginalized genre (though it seems to've garnered some trendiness as of late). Even in my advanced state of jadedness there's something noble about it I must admit, even if I find listening to said bands about as interesting as watching the dungballs crust upon the ass of a donkey (coughReverendBizarrecough). Oh well, at least those bands have some connection to actual heavy rock, unlike say, SHIT O))), who ARE crusted dungballs.
'Sides, I've got my Pentagram, Candlemass, Pagan Altar and second to only thee Mighty Sabs in thee doom sweepstakes, Saint Vitus albums. This demo is actually a much better listen than the first LP-- it has much crunchier production, so those titanic Dave Chandler power chords crush into yer chest like a sledgehammer, and Scott Reagers' impeccably melodramatic invocations might as well be in yer living room. Ripped at a glorious 320 kbps to maximize yer pleasure.
Tracks:
1. Saint Vitus
2. The Sadist
3. White Magic/Black Magic
4. The Psychopath
5. White Stallions
6. Zombie Hunger
7. Burial at Sea

Only band who's logo is tattooed on my body.
ReplyDeleteyou're totally right about this being a better listen sound-wise than the album "proper"... as definitive as it was for certain periods of certain bands, Spot's production always had a bit of a "muddled" tone to it which is less prevalent here. nice one.
ReplyDeleteand I do have the Zess queued up too, but being the Vitus fan I am I hadda hear this right away
great stuff, more raw and old styled REAL METAL!!!! - sorry for this... - about the issue, a friend of mine used to say that much people on fringe genres, like stoner metal or old school hc, lost the plot that what made most pioneers on revival genres was making things when they were not trendy, out of pure love for a music who was down and out for everybody else except for themselves. ST.vitus are not great because the format of their music or out of season stance, but because they made their lack of connection with the rest of the world and the ridicule and sublime of this on their own art, something most people who imitate them never were able to understand...AND YOU CAN COPY BEING AHEAD OF YOUR TIME, FUCKER. no matter how much you try.
ReplyDeleteah, and the production: really its much less muddy than the first album version, and a lil more faster, their connections with traditional metal - judas, early iron maiden - get clearer on this demo versions. and the guitar is more proeminent on the mix. awesome stuff, anyway!
ReplyDeleteYeah, Spot was always hit or miss for me-- his production was great for 'Flag (though I wish he'd given Greg Ginn's axe a little more bottom end), but Vitus' early stuff sounds kinda flat. Granted, I've learned to accept their aural idiosyncrasies over the milions of time I've played 'em.
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU ....finally someone is speaking my language!!!! Saint Vitus is most definetly one of my favorite gods of doom my brother!!!...KEEP IT UP!!!!!
ReplyDeleteROCK ON!!!
Sorry, but I'm not so sure this is a demo. I'd say this is more a rough mix of the first LP, with a little speed added maybe (unwillingly so, I suppose, in the copy process). Listen to the solos, the drums etc. - just like on the LP. I'd bet I'm right.
ReplyDeleteWell, since I respect your ears, I'm gonna give 'em both a close once over as soon as I get a chance. Could be that a rough mix passes for a demo to some people (like the one who gave me this).
ReplyDeletePS: Thanks for respecting my ears. End ear discrimination now!
ReplyDeleteSo what's your opinion, Jake? What do you hear?
ReplyDeleteOK. I do hear some variances with the vocals, like there was a different set of takes used-- I think yer right about "demo" being a misnomer, although who knows what it is? An alternate mix? Whatever the case may be, I still think it sounds better than the actual album... fatter rhythm guitars and not the flatter than Paris Hilton overall sound.
ReplyDeleteSo, spendingloudnight won't re-up this, but will anyone who downloaded it do so? The link doesn't work and I'd LOVE to hear this...
