Have You Ever Been Fucked Over Lately?

RAVEN - Back To Ohio Blues

self released 1975

Columbus, Ohio

Jesus, where do I begin? Okay, earlier this week I went to one of my favorite music sites SHIT-FI and read lead scribe Stuart Schrader's hilarious and dead on review of Ohio (AGAIN?!) rock brute RAVEN's 'Back To Ohio Blues'. A lot of times, when you hear about 'this is a crazy proto-punk assault' it's pretty tenuous, taking a bit of imagination to get you there. For his pure 'life is fucked, fuck it' lyrics and 'I could give a shit' attitude Raven is, in my book, a Proto-Punk on par with Ohio compadre's Electric Eels (I promise not to mention them in my next post - PROMISE), MC5 and yes, even Stooges.

Musically, 'B2OB' is definitely crude and rude; on album opener 'Can't You See' the bass player is so off the mark it's RIGHT FUCKING ON, adding a menace to a track that may have been merely 'okay' without it. Raven, who sings and plays guitar, definitely knows his way around a six string, pounding out the biker rock riffage and tearing off the solos after every obnoxious phrase. It's certainly nothing new but the recordings were done quick, left rough and, if Raven's lyrics are to be believed, fueled by sick amounts of hard drugs and booze. Needless to say, there's an energy and violence at play here that is just missing in a lot of other so called 'lost heavy psych gems'.

And those lyrics! And that voice!

Raven tries to play it cool, like on 'Raven Mad Jam' where he belts out the tried and true ambiguous 'Gotta Get High / Gotta Get Down' mantra. But just when you're ready to once again endure that farty old wink wink nudge nudge, Raven figures his listening audience may be sick of that old hat (or maybe to drunk to get it) and lays it bare with a 'Gotta Get Stoned! / Gotta Get Fucked!' coupling and with a hell of a lot more blood than the previous one. And in case you're thinking that by 'Gotta Get Stoned' Raven is talking about smoking a little Alcopoco Gold in a wicker chair, guess again Jack Webb!

Okay, Raven's vocals are really great. He just doesn't give a fuck. In the lyrically rewarding, musically trying title track, Raven starts with a lamenting tone (of course, I mean, he's going back to OHIO) that , as the 13+ minute blues dirge marches on, turns into a howling, grunting psychopath screaming for a release only death (or some really pure heroin) can bring. On the afore mentioned 'Can't You See', Raven sings pretty well on the main vocal, but follows that up with a backing track where he's so fucked up, he's off time and slurring. It's GREAT!

In keeping Jake's policy of honesty, I'll say that the third track doesn't hold up to the rest of the album, but just musically. The lyrics are still crazy.

Of course, like everyone else, Raven has a myspace page which held a surprise even bigger than the fact that he's not dead or in jail: His track 'Asshole 2007 EDIT' is a solo guitar piece that has far more in common Keiji Haino than Jeff Beck! No shit! Also, homeboy has vinyl for sale and will sign that shit!

  2. Excellent scribing! In fact, it's far more entertaining than the Shit-Fi piece (to be honest, I took that link down cuz I couldn't stand that guy's writing-- other than the Confuse rant [if it wuz the same guy], it smacks of one-week-outta-university academia). And the music? Fuckin' great! Shall add more when I've digested it more fully.

  3. wow i really like this.....it doesnt strike me as rough and tumble as it did you, but it certainly is, um, authentic sounding....? thanks again

  4. Aw, man - I like Stu's stuff - but I read Stephen King, too, so whadda I know? The line about how if most rock of the era were as honest (authentic!) as 'B2OB' it would have negated the need for punk... probably true, though thankfully not reality.

Kevinass, musically, yeah - it's nothing revolutionary (I did try to make that clear) BUT Raven's rants in a year that was topped by Paul Simon, Carol King, Janis Ian & Helen Reddy - this excites me! They're just a direct FUCK YOU to 1970's 'I'm OK, You're OK' America. If only it were faster, eh?

  6. Armand Schaubroeck. Don't like 'im... poor man's Lou Reed.

As for this album-- lovin' it! Played it four times already, but I do take issue with it having ANYTHING to do with punk. You'd really hafta stretch to squeeze an Electric Eels comparison in there. What I hear is acid-fried biker rock a la Blue Cheer, Hairy Chapter or San Francisco's Shiver. Sure, the production's raw 'n' shit, but I'm sure that had more to do with the band's budget than anything else.

Mebbe it's because nobody wants to utter that ugly "metal" word (I fully embrace and love it personally), but that's exactly what this is: metal before it splintered into 1000's of sub-genres and became codified by its various practitioners. Certainly nuthin' to be ashamed of... great post, Mars!

  7. I'm usually up for trying a new artist, but the mood wasn't really on me today - but then the mention of Keiji in the write up, and Jake's passing mention of Blue Cheer made me decide to take a chance - and really what else is there do do in a dead city on a monday night? Glad I di - one room at least wasn't so dead for a while after all! yay!

  9. Okay!
First Jake, PLEASE re-read what I wrote carefully. I'm not talking Punk as in Punk as Music, but Punk as an Attitude. I mean, if we can categorize VU as Proto-Punk with their penchant for softer tunes with decidedly un-soft themes, certainly Raven's knuckle dragging reality and complete lack of commercial concession can, too. If Raven REALLY wanted to get on the radio, I highly HIGHLY doubt we'd get the lyrics he sings. And that's what really makes me love Raven are his vocals and lyrics. The music is great, too, I love LOVE Blue Cheer, Firebirds etc. more than Ramones, Clash, what have you, so that's no surprise. But listen what this dude is singing and compare it with Stooges, or even some Ramones. There's not too much of a difference to me. In fact, this dude is more direct - artless even.

I grew up in a Proto-Metal (HAHA!) household with Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Queen, Beatles ' White Album' and Nazareth were constantly on my Moms turntable (I'm sorry- RECORD PLAYER - let's keep it real), so Metal is in my blood and I have no shame. 'Helter Skelter' at full blast and a heaping bowl of Cap'n Crunch would have me exploding around the house! Musically, this is pretty Metal, I guess in the early Grand Funk mold with some Zep moves here and there, but played with a Stooge level of technical skill. Yeah, that's pretty right on.

Speaking of the Keiji reference, did anyone check out that track on his Myspace?

Anyway, happy everyone liked this and glad it's sparked a conversation!

  10. Ya gots to follow my frame of mind, Mars-- wasn't critiquing your critique. What I'm sick 'n' tired of is these bourgeois punks claiming proto-metal artists as their own. Look at the swill that dickhead Julian Cope rants about for example-- oh yeah, Montrose wuz punks to the nth degree! And Sir Lord Baltimore. And Pentagram ad nauseum. Funny he's this born-again metalhead... don't seem to recall catching any of that influence in Teardrop Explodes or any of the dreck he's released under his own name forever and ever now.Oh, until that Brain Donor shit where he yaps "Motherfucker" over & over in his posh accent... so authentic.

    How relevant.

  11. Ah, I can 'Dig It, Man'. I love Julian Cope's taste in music, but I remember a video of his from the late 80's as being so bad, I've never had the guts or the will to check out anything else he's ever done.

Did he REALLY say that Montrose was punk?

You know, back when I was in high school I was given a stack of moldy old 70's Rolling Stones (it was as horrible then as ever, IMO). In one was an ad for one of the first three Ramones albums (can't remember which). The hype line was, no shit, "The Best Heavy Metal Album Ever". That just really put it all together for me, man. Were the word 'punk' not introduced, we'd probably call all that came after Ramones 'Street Metal' or something.

As my redneck-ish brother says about my music collection "It's all just wicked weird Metal."

  13. I'm down with yer red-bro....pistols/satellite is metal. period. Bad motor cycle by montrose is great....maybe punk, who gives a shit. Or is it bad motor scooter? whatever. I even have a teardrop explodes 7 inch that, gulp, rawks. Not to worry, I just like some stuff, and other stuff i dont. I assume it's the same for anyone who gets excited bout some kinda music, whatever it may be.
